The Greatest Chase Scenes of All Time

Chase scenes have been around almost as long as movies. As far back as the days of the Keystone Cops and Buster Keaton, filmmakers have been thrilling audiences with exciting and exhilarating chases. Let's take a look at some of the best chases ever filmed:
Ronin (1998)
This high octane thriller was directed by the legendary John Frankenheimer and stars Robert De Niro and Jean Reno. It contains two of the most intense and realistic car chase scenes in movie history. The first chase involves a Mercedes Benz 450SEL, a BMW M5 and an Audi A8. The chase occurs as a result of an ambush that was orchestrated to steal a briefcase with unknown contents. The chase begins on a twisting road along the French Riviera. Two of the cars are eventually diverted off the road and the chase moves to a dirt road. The cars eventually end up on the narrow streets of Nice, France. The chase concludes when one car crashes into the front of a restaurant.
The second chase involves a Peugeot 406 driven by De Niro chasing a BMW M5. This chase has added excitement because it takes place on the wrong way of a busy freeway, a metro tunnel and Paris streets. The chase ends when the BMW has its tires shot out. This causes it to crash off the end of a freeway that was still under construction.
The World is Not Enough (1999)
This James Bond film starring Pierce Brosnan has an epic chase in the opening sequence of the film. A female assassin in a speedboat is pursued along the Thames River by Bond in a jet boat that is powered by a rocket. During the chase, Bond must evade a larger boat that has snipers shooting at him. During the chase, Bond must submerge the boat to pass under a bridge that has been lowered. This is not your typical boat chase. At one point, Bond takes the boat on land and crashes through a restaurant to make a shortcut. The assassin eventually tries to escape in a hot-air balloon when her boat is destroyed. Bond grabs a line attached to the balloon, but the assassin commits suicide by blowing up the balloon, sending Bond crashing onto the top of the Millennium Dome.
Bullitt (1968)
This Steve McQueen classic is generally regarded as the greatest movie car chase of all time. The 10-minute sequence was filmed on the hilly streets of San Francisco. McQueen, driving a 1968 Ford Mustang Fastback GT, chases criminals who are in a 1968 Dodge Charger. The chase is notable because Steve McQueen does all of his own driving in the sequence. This would never be allowed today. Lead actors are insured for large sums of money, so no insurance company would take that risk. However, this film was made in a different era.
New and inventive chase sequences continue to delight audiences every year. Indeed, the skill and danger involved in bringing these sequences to the big screen can not be understated.
